WASHINGTON - The International Trade Commission wants to know who would import pickups and how much market share they might gain if the 25 percent U.S. tariff, known as the chicken tax, were cut or eliminated.
Officials of the American International Automobile Dealers Association, who recently started a campaign to repeal the 36-year-old chicken tax, acknowledged there may be no reliable answers.
``Without a crystal ball, I can't say,'' David Mungenast said in response to Commissioner Jennifer Hillman's inquiries at a June 15 hearing on tariff cuts. Mungenast is a five-franchise dealer in the St. Louis area and the immediate past chairman of AIADA.
